AI in everyday state operations
In Government Technology’s Digital States interview, Iowa CIO Matt Behrens identifies a public-facing procurement chatbot as a prominent state AI initiative. He says it answers questions about active contracts and helps prospective vendors understand requirements.
Behrens also describes staff use of Gemini, Copilot and Claude, and sees potential for AI to make information from separate data sources more consistent and useful.
What the interview establishes
These are the CIO’s descriptions of current work and future opportunities. The interview does not supply an independent savings evaluation or replace Iowa’s written rules for agency AI use. Our Government guide links to that policy.
