Local rezoning denied

Linn County supervisors voted 3–0 on October 20 to deny the rezoning application for Alliant Energy’s proposed Morgan Valley Energy Center. The county’s project record confirms the decision and cancellation of the second and third consideration meetings.

The county had approved a host community agreement on October 14. That agreement did not approve the plant or its rezoning.

Separate state and air-permit reviews

In its October 21 announcement, the county says Iowa Utilities Commission consideration is scheduled to begin December 7 and that a state generating certificate could override the local denial. Air-quality permitting remains a separate review involving Linn County Public Health and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The project is part of Iowa’s debate over electricity investments serving large customers, including data centers. In previously reported county responses, Alliant said those customers would cover investments needed to serve them; that remains the company’s position. The rezoning decision establishes neither a final state outcome nor a change in household rates.
